I really like the idea of that cake. What kind of candy would you use for the outside?

Any type of hard candy would work just fine. You could stick with grocery store finds like lifesavers or jolly ranchers, or try a new brand like La Vosgienne candies from REI which come in flavors like lemon, cherry and raspberry: http://bit.ly/bRp4fd.
