My dears, have you read anything good lately? I've found myself reading a bit of one book here and a bit of another there, carrying on like this throughout the summer. I've decided it's time to put my dabbling habits on the shelf for a bit and devote myself wholly to one title again. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is my novel of choice and since I've heard only wonderful things about it I'm anxious to get started. It's the story of a young Irish-American girl growing up in Brooklyn and her experiences with poverty, her father's alcoholism and growing up into a woman. It was also made into an oscar-winning movie in 1945. I'm a firm believer in the book being better than the movie so I intend to read it first but a film-viewing afterward would be a lovely way to finish it all off.
Have you ever read it? What were your thoughts (please, no spoilers!)? I'd love to have you read it with me. Care to join in?
